The little port of SAFI, south of El Jadida revived in the last century with the export of sardines and phosphates and it was the starting point of another epic journey by Thor Heyerdahl, of Kon Tiki fame. He believed navigators from Africa may have crossed the Atlantic 4,500 years ago and landed in South America which would explain the existence of pyramid structures on both sides of the Atlantic.
He constructed a boat with papyrus, a style still used in Morocco at the start of the 20th century, and sailed on his Ra expedition from Safi eventually reaching Barbados in the West Indies, validating the possibility of his theory.
